A Mum's Perspective
Two years ago Ben’s one to one support was removed by his previous provider due to lack of capacity. Although support was available within his accommodation there was little engagement and a reactive rather than proactive approach.
As a result, Ben became increasingly unsettled and reliant on family support. He would come home at weekends for a ‘reboot’ and so that we knew he was safe.
Since moving to Stoke-Sub-Hamdon and being supported by Enable and Support we have noticed that Ben is much more relaxed. He is excited about what he is achieving and can’t wait to tell us tales of what he has cooked this evening and that his bedroom is still today. In his previous accommodation he lived in chaos.
He rings less, sometimes missing a day or two because he has carers that engage with him and talk to him. Previously we would have sometimes 5-10 calls a night requiring reassurance or to sort things out – not easy from a distance!
It is early days but the difference we have seen is huge. Ben is engaging in talking about life choices and what he wants to achieve, and I know this is because his carers are talking to him about this. Ben now has routine and he knows what to expect each day, this means that he is less frustrated and more able to cope.
